The left has given up on tolerance

Recent events — specifically at Berkeley where free speech was once a staple of its identity — have led many to question the sincerety of the Left’s concept of tolerance and honest debate. The author speaks with Jonathan Haidt, an author, psychologist, and professor of ethical leadership at New York University’s Stern School of Business, who, according to the author, states the “crackdown on ideological diversity is a recent phenomenon and is a result of the convergence of America’s political polarization, sorting (college campuses have finally reached a saturation point where there are virtually no conservative professors), and the rise of social media that ‘greatly amplifies the power of whatever the majority is.'”

Haidt compares the Left’s strict adherence ideology to a church, asserting “. . . you cannot have blasphemy on campus. And so the best way to understand what happened is it’s an auto de fé. It’s a religious rite coming together to punish the sinner, to punish the devil, and to reaffirm our community.”

It was once true that Americans valued debate, but that no longer seems to be the case. “Americans once grew up hearing liberals say ‘I may not agree with what you say, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it.’ Those days seem sadly gone. They grew up hearing people say, ‘Hey, it’s a free country.’ All of a sudden you don’t hear that anymore. All of a sudden, it doesn’t seem so free.”
